Abdominal pain what is diagnosis?
Teaching point
Water beads are superabsorbent polymer spheres that expand when exposed to fluid after ingestion. Once enlarged, they may become radiolucent or only faintly visible, producing a mottled intraluminal appearance rather than discrete foreign bodies. Accumulation within the bowel can cause obstruction, particularly in young children, and serial imaging helps assess progression and clearance.
AP (image 1) and lateral (image 2) abdominal radiographs show numerous rounded, mottled densities filling the course of the colon. Follow-up radiograph (image 3) demonstrates interval passage of some beads, with persistent filling of the colon by remaining beads.
