24 year old male presents to pharmacy after being seen at an urgent care. Sore throat/purulent tonsils for 6 days, no fever until day 6 but mild at 99.6. No other past medical history besides obesity, although patient has had similar looking tonsils on 2 other occasions this year, one resolved with antibiotics and one with no treatment. All vital signs normal besides temperature. Patient was diagnosed with strep throat (although rapid strep test came back negative) and a “re-activation of mono” according to urgent care (patient first had mono 6 years ago). Prescribed Augmentin 875mg twice daily for 10 days. Patient wants my thoughts given the negative strep as he tries to avoid antibiotics when possible.
