Focused chest CT of the left lung apex shows the large apical bleb (arrow) and a small pneumothorax.
Blebs are the most common cause of spontaneous pneumothorax in children. Pulmonary blebs occur exclusively in the lung apices. While they don’t always cause pneumothorax, they are a risk factor for the development of a pneumothorax. When present, apical blebs are bilateral in more than three-quarters of patients. Patients with recurrent pneumothorax may be treated with bleb resection.
