Volvulus of the Sigmoid Colon Intestinal volvulus is the rotation of a segment of bowel around its mesentery. This usually causes a closed-loop obstruction and may cause vascular compromise. Primary volvulus of the colon usually occurs in the sigmoid colon and in the cecum; the other parts of the large bowel are well fixed in the posterior abdominal wall.
