Mini Mystery 2
The Fright of the Googly-Eyed Baby
It’s a sweltering summer night and I’m in the trauma room turning over a more-or-less stable GSW Pt when a new EMS report comes over the speaker. The medic’s voice is audible over the sirens because of adrenaline and genuine concern. At the door the sobbing father handed the medic a limp 10-month-old with dysconjugate gaze; she disconcertingly describes how one eyeball rolls back contralaterally away from the other. They were only a few blocks in and... a minute later she dashes in the trauma room with a baby in her arms and hands him to a nurse who promptly gets puked on. The GSW Pt has a look on his face like, “Hey, everybody, what about me?” when the entire team darts over to the other bay. Emotions are roiled into an instant frenzy. Then the astute emesis-soiled nurse voices an observation that immediately calms everyone down a notch. Any idea what she could have observed?
