Axial contrast-enhanced CT of the chest in a young patient with known respiratory papillomatosis shows numerous pulmonary nodules, some of which are solid (white arrow) and some of which are cavitary with thick wall (black arrows).
This disorder is due to vertical transmission of certain types of human papilloma virus during vaginal delivery. Involvement of the lung parenchyma is much less common than involvement of the larynx or tracheobronchial tree. #ThoraxThursday

Coronal image from a chest CT shows a tracheal bronchus (arrow). A tracheal bronchus is an anatomic variant where an accessory bronchus or displaced bronchus arises from the trachea. The tracheal bronchus almost always supplies the right upper lobe. Patients with a tracheal bronchus are usually asymptomatic but may present with recurrent right upper lobe pneumonia or recurrent right upper lobe atelectasis if intubated.\n#ThoraxThursday #ThoracicThursday

Frontal radiograph of the chest (image 1) and coronal CT images (images 2 and 3) MRI in a patient with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis show a cystic lesion within the right upper lobe. On the CT, there are multiple cysts. A hepatoma is visible within the trachea (arrow). Recurrent pulmonary papillomatosis is caused by human papillomavirus. In children, the transmission of human papillomavirus occurs during labor. However, most children born to women with human papillomavirus do not develop recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Children with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis have multiple solid pulmonary nodules. With time, the nodules cavitate. These patients are at risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma. #ThoraxThursday #ThoracicThursday
