Axial T2-w (image 1), diffusion-weighted image (image 2), and CT (image 3) show extensive changes related to encephalitis. There are multiple areas of increased T2 signal scattered throughout the brain. These correspond to areas of restricted diffusion and low density on CT. Encephalitis can be caused by infectious or immune-mediated etiologies. When infectious, encephalitis often has a viral origin making detection of the specific pathogen difficult.
