Chest x-ray in a premature neonate shows diffuse granular opacities related to respiratory distress syndrome. Respiratory distress syndrome is caused by a deficiency in surfactant production by the immature type II pneumocytes. Potential acute complications of respiratory distress syndrome include pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and pulmonary interstitial emphysema. The most common chronic complication is chronic lung disease of prematurity. Patients are treated with exogenous surfactant. #ThoraxThursday #ThoracicThursday
