Inguinal hernia

AP radiograph (image 1) and axial contrast-enhanced CT (image 2) show large bilateral inguinal hernias (arrows) containing bowel. Indirect inguinal hernias, the most common type in neonates, result from a patent processus vaginalis and are treated surgically to repair the defect.

Radiograph of the abdomen obtained during small bowel follow through shows the appendix (arrow) extending into the inguinal canal consistent with an Amyand hernia. An Amyand hernia represents an inguinal hernia containing the appendix. This occurs in approximately one percent of inguinal hernias.](https://app.figure1.com/case-detail/4dd590d2-96dd-4824-826f-dd7145301d06)

AP (image 1) and lateral (image 2) radiographs of the abdomen in a neonate with gastroschisis display loops of bowel (arrow) external to the patient. Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect with herniation of bowel through the defect. It is distinguished from an omphalocele by the absence of a covering membrane. The condition is rarely associated with other malformations. Potential complications include intestinal atresias, stenosis, or bowel perforation. The focal dilated loop of bowel in this patient suggests the presence of complex gastroschisis with a bowel atresia or stenosis.](https://app.figure1.com/case-detail/546d0e77-733e-48dd-8cac-2ab8b61605ea)

Chest radiograph in a neonate shows a large left congenital diaphragmatic hernia displacing the heart and mediastinum towards the right. Congenital diaphragmatic hernias are more common on the left. Prognosis depends on lung development and potential associated syndromes or conditions.](https://app.figure1.com/case-detail/586e0650-6072-44a9-9aab-e1fd1162291e)
