Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect with herniation of bowel through the defect. It is distinguished from an omphalocele by the absence of a covering membrane. The condition is rarely associated with other malformations. Potential complications include intestinal atresias, stenosis, or bowel perforation. The focal dilated loop of bowel in this patient suggests the presence of complex gastroschisis with a bowel atresia or stenosis.

He had a history of hypertension, long-term smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle. On physical examination, bibasilar crackles were noted on lung auscultation. An electrocardiogram (ECG) was performed in the primary care setting, and the patient was promptly referred to the emergency department.
