Prenatal ultrasound image show gastroschisis, a birth defect where the baby’s intestines (arrowhead) extend through a defect (arrow) in the abdominal wall.
Gastroschisis is differentiated from an omphalocele by the lack of a membrane covering the bowel, the location of the defect to the right of the umbilical cord. Gastroschisis is thought to occur as a result of an insult to the blood vessels supplying the abdominal wall.
