Please provide comments on the following CONCEPT from a team at the MIT Hacking Medicine Grand Hack 2018 (hackathon):
Problem Statement: Currently, access to interpreter services at the point of care is less than ideal. Patients by law should have access to interpreter services when needed but despite this, 46% of emergency medical situations for patients with a language barrier were handled without interpretation services, which have been shown to result in poor clinical outcomes. Healthcare providers use a variety of services available ranging from on-staff interpreters to third-party agencies but accessing these services involve long wait times, require back and forth dialogue with a variety of stakeholders, and are a nightmare to schedule.
Solution: MediLingo is an on-demand interpretive services solution that streamlines access to medical interpreters by matching patients and doctors with available on-staff interpreters as well as freelance interpreters across the country.
Key questions:
- A) What’s the hardest part of getting translation services for you?
- B) What do you typically do when a non-English speaking patient arrives in your care?
- C) Have you ever forgone interpreter services because of access or scheduling difficulties?
- D) Who do you think is the most compelling user for this application? (e.g. Nurses, doctors, triage, patient, etc.)
