21M lost control of his motorcycle and crashes into the median on the highway. He had two tourniquets applied by the fire department in the field. He presented to the trauma bay with an isolated injury to his left lower extremity. He had a traumatic through knee amputation with extensive contamination and soft tissue injury. There was not any pulsatile bleeding. How are you going to decide what level of amputation is required for the patient? What surgical steps are taken to decrease the chance for post-operative deformity? After deciding which amputation you are going to perform, what metabolic changes are to be expected with ambulation?
