At the @DoctorsWithoutBorders Dasht-e-Barchi hospital in Afghanistan, a premature baby is treated for jaundice under phototherapy lights. Infant jaundice — a yellow discoloration in a newborn baby's skin and eyes — is a complication that can affect newborns, but can be treated by exposure to ultraviolet light under a phototherapy lamp. Since November 2014, MSF has been running a specialized maternity department dedicated to emergency obstetric care, neonatal services, and complicated deliveries in the hospital. The facility serves a population of more than 1.3 million in western Kabul.
