Enlarged tonsils

A lateral radiograph of the airway reveals moderate enlargement of the adenoids (arrow) and palatine tonsils (arrowhead). The adenoid enlargement narrows the nasopharyngeal airway. Adenoidectomy may be indicated in patients whom the nasal airway is obstructed or who experience obstructive sleep apnea, recurrent otitis media, or recurrent sinusitis.
