Patient Case Descriptions
What is the role of the primary care or emergency medicine physician? The patient should be referred to an ophthalmologist urgently due to concern for a retinal detachment and/or retinal tear that could progress to a retinal detachment.
What is the role of the ophthalmologist? The role includes examining the eye with a slit-lamp biomicroscope, assessing for location, size, and cause of vitreous hemorrhage. B-scan ultrasonography can help detect various eye conditions.
What is the treatment? Vitreous hemorrhage may resolve spontaneously; treatment is based on the cause. Options include anti-VEGF injections and surgical interventions such as scleral buckling.
Case: 59 yrs old pt with sub conjunctival hemorrhage due to strong coughing; has history of mastoiditis.
Case: Patient in late teens presenting after a collapse, no chest pain, no previous cardiac history.
