Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Frontal radiograph of the chest in a newborn shows diffuse, granular pulmonary opacities, consistent with respiratory distress syndrome. Respiratory distress syndrome is caused by immature, type II pneumocytes that cannot yet form surfactant. Respiratory distress syndrome affects neonates born before 35 weeks of gestational age as the pneumocytes fully develop at 36 weeks.
