Elbow Dislocation With Avulsed Medial Epicondyle | Figure 1

Elbow Dislocation With Avulsed Medial Epicondyle

Image description

Lateral (image 1) and AP (image 2) radiographs show ulnar-sided elbow dislocation. The medial epicondyle (arrow) is avulsed from its donor site (arrowhead). On the lateral view, the avulsed fragment projects over the elbow joint.

Teaching point

Medial epicondyle avulsion associated with elbow dislocation can be subtle on initial radiographs, particularly when the fragment overlies the joint space. Failure to recognize the displaced fragment may lead to missed intra-articular incarceration, which can limit reduction and contribute to chronic instability or loss of motion. Careful evaluation of epicondylar alignment and the donor site is essential, especially on post-reduction imaging.
