Old Operating Theatre Museum

This set was used in London after Joseph Lister's new surgical procedures had been introduced, circa the 1890s. It contains a full set of artery forceps in the lid. Cleft lip forceps can be seen in the tray. The box contains some stainless steel instruments but, as the velvet lining to the inside of the box lid indicates, it also holds items of the traditional non-sterilisable era such as a brass framed Petit type tournequet (in the middle section of the image to the lower left) and to the right of this is a trephine blade with brass shaft that has its removable ebony handle next to it.
