The romantic and Victorian eras are famous for waif-like imagery of young women. This was due in part to the romanticization of wasting away from tuberculosis. Women would starve themselves in order to appear more fashionably wasted and anemic.
But don't let romantic notions about diseases goad you into even more unhealthy practices. In this case the anemia was caused by ruptured blood vessels from violent coughing fits as the tuberculosis affected the lungs, eventually leading to necrosis.
