Choanal atresia is 2x more common in girls, can be unilateral or bilateral, and the atresia can be fibrous or bony. Because neonates are obligate nasal breathers, patients with bilateral disease present with acute respiratory distress requiring intubation. Children with unilateral disease may not present until their first upper respiratory infection.
